It is exciting to see folks increasing interest in being green - being green
really means making an effort to conserve, reuse, recycle, to help this
beautiful planet of ours stay beautiful longer. We are all so busy with our
everyday lives, - often it is not until we hit retirement age that we suddenly
really "see" the green of the grass, the beauty of trees and flowers,
the majesty of our lakes and oceans, and truly enjoy what we have taken for
granted in previous years. The value of time, life and nature looms in front of
us, and we feel a passion for preservation for all things natural.
So, let's break it down into bite sized pieces - what can "I" start
doing right now?
Laundry
Use the cold cycle for washing and rinsing. I like my "whites" really
white, and through trial and error, I've discovered that by starting the wash
for about 3 minutes, thus allowing all the clothes to be soaked. I then turn
off the machine and let my wash pre-soak (approx. one hour for colours, and two
hours for whites_ - my laundry always comes out beautifully clean.
Do laundry only on weekends and thus avoid high peaks in energy usage. (The
first thing I do upon rising on Saturday is to start my first laundry load, and
I complete this task in between other chores or errands. Often I'll let the
"whites" laundry load pre-soak overnight on Saturday, and then start
the washing cycle upon rising on Sunday. - - Organize your laundry activities
according to your own schedule).
If you are able to dry your laundry outside, then you can save even more on
your energy bill, and help the environment.
Result=clean clothes, and savings on my energy bill.
